Celery
There are vegetables that are much easier to grow than celery, but if youâre up for a bit of a challenge (or if youâre a major celery enthusiast), then by all means, go for it.
Types: Thereâs cutting celery, nonblanching celery, and celery for flavoring; thereâs also celeriac, which is a delectable root that many gardeners enjoy planting. Pascal varieties of celery are very popular; you can get started with Giant Pascal or Summer Pascal.
Garden Requirements: Heavy, moist soil is best for celery plants. Youâll need to keep them regularly watered, and it helps if your weather is cool. The ideal soil will have lots of nutrients, as celery âeatsâ a lot and needs rich soil in order to support itself.
Special Considerations: To achieve success with celery, you need three main components: a long growing season, plenty of cool weather, and plenty of water.
Planting Information: If you can find seedlings, by all means, go ahead and buy them. This will give you a head start in the growing season. But if you canât locate seedlings, you can certainly start your seeds indoors. Plant the seeds about â inch deep, and keep the planted seeds protected from sunlight. Some gardeners suggest adding a thin layer of moss over the top of the soil until the celery seeds sprout. When you transplant the celery seedlings to your garden, space them between 6 and 12 inches apart, in rows 12 to 18 inches apart.
Growing Time: Celery takes timeâand lots of it. Figure on 115 to 135 days to reach maturity.
Soil pH: 6.0 to 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral).
